The church’s adult choir, Promesa de Esperanza, will perform the cantata “Risen This Day” as part of the Good Friday worship service at 7 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2024.
“Risen This Day,” composed by Benjamin Harlan and John Parker, was chosen from about a half-dozen candidates by Kazin Cole, Esperanza’s choir director. In performance, the work will run about 30 minutes.
“It’s gorgeous, emotional music,” says Cole, who began as director last October. “It makes me feel thankful for the sacrifice Jesus made for us.”
Promesa de Esperanza has about 20 members, several of whom have a music background. Some also sing in the Sonoran Desert Chorale in Mesa.
Cole, who grew up in a nondenominational church and is also choral director at Mountain Pointe High School, says Esperanza is a congregation that loves to sing.
“My vision is to increase the size of the choir, to do music more frequently and to do some bigger works,” he says. “I’ve been learning so much. So many around me have been able to help.”
