The Grand Canyon Synod of the ELCA will present a symposium on Saturday, Feb. 17, exploring the history and theology of Christian nationalism and providing information on how we can respond. Those interested can attend in person at Peace Lutheran Church in Peoria or online.
In 2019, the Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the ELCA, joined Christian leaders in a statement against Christian nationalism.
“Whether we worship at a church, mosque, synagogue, or temple, America has no second-class faiths,” the statement reads. “All are equal under the U.S. Constitution.”
As Christians, our faith teaches us that everyone is created in God’s image and commands us to love one another. As Americans, we value our system of government and the good that can be accomplished in our constitutional democracy. Today, we are concerned about a persistent threat to both our religious communities and our democracy in the form of Christian nationalism.
