Open-Hearted & Listening

A person posing for the cameraWhat are we really doing here—at Esperanza?

The answer to this question is never one that comes from us; it only comes from God. And there are so many possible answers to this question. We cannot take for granted what the mission of any congregation is. God has gathered God’s people at this place, 2601 E Thunderhill Place in Phoenix, to do or be something specific and concrete.

God could be calling us to, primarily,

  • build community
  • proclaim the gospel
  • love our neighbor in word and deed
  • show hospitality to our neighbors
  • raise children in faith and life
  • nurture connections between people of all ages
  • or something entirely different…

Whatever our mission is, our discernment is communal, not a solo activity. We all likely have thoughts about what Esperanza’s mission is, and the hope of the transition team is that you will share them at our upcoming Mission Gatherings! However, we need not construct a mission so much as discern what God has called us to do. Or in other words, the bulk of discernment is not talking but listening—to God and to our community.

Please join us at a Mission Gathering so that you can share in this communal discernment about what God has called us to be and do.
