The first-grade teachers at Kyrene de la Esperanza Elementary School have given us the thumbs-up for the opportunity to listen (we are no longer reading) to a child read a teacher-chosen book. In the time you’re there, you might be asked to listen to several children. A quiet place for listening will be made available.
Many people showed interest by signing up. I will be contacting those people by e-mail soon. If you haven’t signed up and are interested in doing so, it’s not too late to let me know by either signing the sheet in the Fellowship area, texting your name and e-mail address to me at 602-570-2377, or, filling in your name on one of the time slots below. Working with the students will occur at the school, which is located at 14841 South 41st Place, Phoenix.
The teachers have asked for volunteers to come in on M, T, Th, or F during the following time periods: 9:15 – 9:50, 12:05 – 12:45, 12:45 – 1:35, and 1:35 – 2:05. You can sign up for one or more time slots. At this time I’m going to try to get the last two weeks of January filled in, then I’ll fill in February dates. Once you sign up via the newsletter, I will be alerted as to your intent to volunteer, and I will let the school office and the teachers know you will be coming. Please plan to go 5-10 minutes early the first time so a copy of your fingerprint card can be made and a visitor pass issued to you. The office staff will direct you to the classrooms.
You must have a valid Level One fingerprint card to volunteer at the school. The process for obtaining a fingerprint card is: Go to AZDPS.GOV to fill out the form; a $65 fee is required for the processing of the card. Once approved, fingerprints can be obtained at SELECT sites (Live Scan, post office, UPS Stores, and some local police stations). The cost for being fingerprinted runs between $10-$50, and the card is valid for five years. It is highly recommended you call ahead to make sure they have the necessary equipment at the fingerprinting site. It can take several weeks to complete the process, depending on the number of applicants applying at any one time.
