The Habitat for Humanity homebuilding project involving volunteers from Esperanza is progressing ahead of schedule.
Drywall installation has been completed on the house at 3610 S. Roosevelt St., near Broadway Road and Hardy Drive, in Tempe. No work is scheduled for Saturday, April 15, or Tuesday, April 18, as the project awaits the delivery of doors and trim. Those are scheduled to be installed on Saturday, April 22.
“We’re doing well and the house looks great,” said John Fisher, who has been on the crew.
Work over the next two weeks will include tape-and-texture finish of the drywall, along with stucco application to the exterior. Painting of the interior and exterior is scheduled in the next month.
The house is being constructed for a single mother, Angela Pelosi, and her three children. It is on track to be turned over to the family with a ceremony on Saturday, July 8.
Three other churches from the Southeast Valley Lutheran Coalition also are contributing time and resources to the build: Mountain View in Ahwatukee, Desert Cross in Tempe and Holy Trinity in Chandler. Between 20 and 40 volunteers have been turning out on Saturdays, in addition to a crew of a dozen experienced workers on Tuesdays.
Esperanza Sunday School children and their families provided lunch for the workers on April 1, serving beef stew and chili, salad from the church’s garden and dessert. Esperanza also will be responsible for lunch on May 6 and June 3. The schedule is posted at church.
