Question: Which popular Esperanza social event began about 10 years ago but had to be suspended in recent years?
Answer: Um … let me think on that … I should know this … Trivia Night?
Indeed, that would be Trivia Night, which went on hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic but now appears to have returned for good. The most recent edition, on Jan. 21, attracted about 100 people to the church for fun and games.
“Folks are happy to see it come back,” says Lynn Hockenberger, director of the Children of Hope Child Development Center. “It brings preschool and church families together. Some of our preschool alumni families return because they have a great time.”
Although Trivia Night is not primarily a fundraiser, any surplus funds from the event are put back into improvements on the preschool campus. A current priority for the preschool is a new playground structure.
The big winner from the recent event was a team of six contestants dressed as medical workers and calling themselves Urine Luck. They split a $600 cash prize. Another team, Gotham’s Finest, won for best decorated table with a Batman theme.
Questions came from categories such as pop culture, sports, history and geography — similar to those in a Trivial Pursuit game.
Hockenberger and Parish Administrator Joni Thorpe were the organizers. Steven Thorpe served as master of ceremonies.
